Abstract
Pure red cell aplasia is a disorder which is characterized by decrease in erythroid
series in bone marrow without decrease of myeloid and megakaryocytic series.
The mechanism inducing selective red cell aplasia is still subject to discussion. Some
hypotheses have been put forward, damage of the erythroblastic nuclei, IgG factor cyt-
otoxic to erythroblasts in the presence of complement, blockade of the erythropoietin
receptor sites of the erythropoietin-responsive cells by the antibody, and inhibition of
heme synthesis.
The 56 year old female patient was admitted to our hospital because of left chest pain
and dyspne a during deep respiration for 5 months. In bone marrow aspiration and
biopsy, pure red cell aplasia is considered and on laboratory finding, anti-nuclear
antibody(ANA) is positive, titer of anti-DNA is above 104 unit, and L-E cell is posive.
So we reported a case of pure red cell aplasia associated with systemic lupus
erythematosus with brief review of literature.
